It’s always very revealing to find out the history behind an Etsy shop name and shop owner Renae says  she has a love for penguins and also an interest in many crafty things, from painting, sketching and jewelry design.

In addition to the up-cycled jewelry she also sells a few random vintage items including hand form record bowls made from old vinyl records, and a range of other vintage items.

Like a lot of Etsy sellers, she found Etsy because a few friends had made purchases from on Etsy so it just made sense that because jewelry-making was already in her family and a hobby she took the plunge and opened up Jade Penguin in December 2013.

Talking about the inspiration behind her pieces, Renae says she finds it all over the place.

She really enjoys taking lonely earrings, snapped necklaces or busted bracelets and reusing those pieces into something unique.

Some of the best sellers in Jade Penguin seem to be the Harry Potter-inspired jewelry, which, truth be told, she said she finds surprising since the wizarding world of Harry Potter is such a saturated market.
